SUMMARY:World Wetlands Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally each year on 2 February. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar\, Iran\, on 2 February 1971. \n\n\n\nSince 1997\, World Wetlands Day has been used to: \n\n\n\n\nraise public awareness of wetland values and benefits\n\n\n\npromote the conservation and wise use of wetlands.\n\n\n\n\nJoin in on the day. Attend a seminar or festival\, help with a revegetation project or go on a bird walk. \n\n\n\nWe will be celebrating this anniversary throughout the year. \n\n\n\nHistory\n\n\n\nAustralia was one of the 5 founding nations to sign the Convention. We also designated the world’s first Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar wetland) under the Convention. This was the Cobourg Peninsula\, Northern Territory\, in 1974. \n\n\n\nAustralia continues to play an important role. We help manage and implement the Convention\, internationally\, in the Oceania and in Australia. \n\n\n\nAustralia has 66 Ramsar wetlands\, covering every state and territory. They cover more than 8.3 million hectares. \n\n\n\nIconic Australian sites include: \n\n\n\n\nKakadu National Park (NT)\n\n\n\nRoebuck Bay (WA)\n\n\n\nGippsland Lakes (Vic)\n\n\n\nMoreton Bay (Qld)\n\n\n\nBlue Lake (NSW)\n\n\n\nMacquarie Marshes (NSW)\n\n\n\nCoorong (SA)\n\n\n\n\nWorldwide\, there are 170 Contracting Parties to the Convention and over 2\,400 listed Ramsar wetlands. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorld wetlands day website

SUMMARY:World Wildlife Day
DESCRIPTION:What is World Wildlife Day?\n\n\n\nWorld Wildlife Day is celebrated annually on the 3rd of March in support of animals and plants across the world. The event was proposed by Thailand and was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly during its 68th meeting. The General Assembly reaffirmed the natural value of wildlife and its various contributions\, including ecological\, genetic\, social\, economic\, scientific\, educational\, cultural\, recreational and aesthetic\, to sustainable development and human well-being!  \n\n\n\nThey would then go on to designate the 3rd of March as World Wildlife Day\, in order to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild fauna and flora. The event also aims to recognise the important role of CITES (Convention on International Trade In Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) in ensuring that international trade does not threaten the survival of species! \n\n\n\nWhy is World Wildlife Day Important?\n\n\n\nWorld Wildlife Day is an important event to raise awareness of the extraordinary diversity of wildlife and marine life that we have today. With increasing numbers of endangered and extinct species\, it’s essential to educate people on how we can help conserve the planet to continue to provide for future generations!  \n\n\n\nWhat is the Theme of World Wildlife Day?\n\n\n\nEvery year\, World Wildlife Day has a different theme. In 2018\, the theme was ‘Big Cats: Predators Under Threat’ and in 2019 ‘Life Below Water: For People and the Planet’. In 2023\, the theme is ‘Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation’. The theme for 2023 aims to encourage groups to work together in a concerted effort to create and sustain healthy ecosystems\, wildlife populations and biodiversity.  \n\n\n\nIn 2023\, World Wildlife Day falls on CITIES 50th Anniversary. The organisation centres itself around partnerships that help to ensure sustainability and preservation of species. Working with local and international authorities including the UN\, private sectors\, non-governmental organisations and more\, CITIES have established partnerships across the world that work together to conserve the ecosystem.  \n\n\n\nOn March 23rd 2023\, World Wildlife Day will celebrate the bridges that have been built between CITES and various organisations\, as well as their contribution to sustainability\, conservation\, and biodiversity.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUnited Nations world wildlife day website >>

SUMMARY:Sea Week
DESCRIPTION:What is SeaWeek\n\n\n\nSeaWeek is Australia’s major national public awareness campaign to focus community awareness\, provide information and encourage an appreciation of the sea. SeaWeek gives us a fantastic opportunity to promote educational issues of relevance to the marine environment. SeaWeek events are organised and run by environmental and marine educators across the country. \n\n\n\nAustralia is a marine nation. We have one of the largest ocean territories in the world\, and it drives our climate and weather\, generates employment\, provides food and resources\, and offers lifestyle and recreational opportunities (source CSIRO). \n\n\n\nBetween 1988 and 2014\, ‘Sea Week‘ was the Marine Education Society of Australasia’s (MESA) major national public awareness campaign. With the recent closing of MESA\, the co-ordination of the newly named ‘SeaWeek‘ is now with AAEE and is the AAEE Marine Educators (AAEEME) a Special Interest Group. \n\n\n\nOcean Literacy frame SeaWeek with a focus on understanding the ocean’s influence on you and your influence on the ocean. The 7 Ocean Literacy are ideas international scientists and educators agree everyone should understand about the ocean. \n\n\n\nSeaWeek is linked to the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) the “science we need for the ocean we want”. Ocean Decade is coordinated by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). We are represented on the International Pacific Marine Educators Network (IPMEN) initiated in 2007 by Marine Educators. \n\n\n\nSeaWeek collaborates with the 8 Chapters of AAEE\, marine educators and centers\, marine program providers and community groups that engage with activities with marine\, wetlands and contributing landscapes. Resources are offered to schools\, webinars for educators and everyone is encouraged to cobrand the activity or event they are providing during the SeaWeek. The AAEE website provides a platform to share all information to encourage participation nationally. \n\n\n\nFind out more on AAEE seaweek webpage >>

SUMMARY:Clean Up Australia Day
DESCRIPTION:Clean Up Australia inspires and empowers communities to clean up\, fix up and conserve our environment. \n\n\n\nWhat was started thirty years ago\, by an “average Australian bloke” who had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard has now become the nation’s largest community-based environmental event. \n\n\n\nClean up Australia day website >>

SUMMARY:National Groundwater Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:Groundwater\, while it seems like a fancy scientific term\, is just water that’s held underneath the surface. While technological advancements have been made to help aid in water supply\, groundwater still counts for the majority of the earth’s water supply that’s drinkable and usable. \n\n\n\nFor many\, however\, groundwater doesn’t seem like an important issue. That’s why Groundwater Awareness Week exists to change that opinion. \n\n\n\nNGA Website >>

SUMMARY:World Bee Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating World Bee Day 2023\n\n\n\nLet’s celebrate together\, raise awareness and do something good for bees. \n\n\n\nThe main purpose of World Bee Day events is to spread awareness of the significance of bees and other pollinators for our survival. Simply proclaiming World Bee Day does not do much for bees and other pollinators; the main work of safeguarding their existence still needs to be undertaken. World Bee Day is an excellent opportunity to put bees at the centre of the national conversation for a day and encourage actions that create more bee-friendly landscapes. \n\n\n\nBeekeepers and nature conservationists are united in encouraging improved conditions for bees to build pollination security and to safeguard our food security. \n\n\n\nJoin us in celebrating World Bee Day – 20th May 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorld bee day website >>

SUMMARY:Bird Identification with Ann Houghton
DESCRIPTION:By Willunga Environment Centre and Sustainable Onkaparinga \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn how to identify birds and their calls! Know the difference between male and female and much more! Beginners through to the experienced \n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\n2 hours\n\n\n\nMobile eTicket\n\n\n\n\nTickets are by donation so please pay generously what you can afford. The donations will allow us to provide afternoon tea at the conclusion of the event. \n\n\n\nAnn Houghton\, photographer for the Willunga Birds publication will help us learn about how to identify birds\, showing how different certain birds are between male/female\, and use an app called Australian Birds by Michael Morecombe to identify bird calls. You will see plenty of photos and have many opportunitites to ask questions as well as bring in any photos or bird calls you may need identified. Ann and others lead our birdy outings and has a wealth of knowledge stored. She travels extensively with her Husband Les on Birdy outings across Australia\, and with many other groups. \n\n\n\n(The app gives you a picture of the selected bird which also points out various features of the bird along with a written description plus a map showing the range and distribution. The most helpful part of the app is the bird calls and the various calls each bird makes including their ‘alarm’ call. It is an easy app to use and costs $29.99 A good investment but not necessary for the workshop) \n\n\n\n\nget tickets

SUMMARY:National NAIDOC Week 2023
DESCRIPTION:National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday)\, to celebrate and recognise the history\, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest\, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNational NAIDOC Week Awards Ceremony \n\n\n\nNational NAIDOC Week’s premiere event is the National NAIDOC Week Awards Ceremony which showcases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence. Every year\, a different focus city is chosen to host the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony.  \n\n\n\nPrevious National NAIDOC Week Award Winners come from many different communities within Australia and have different backgrounds\, however they are all part of NAIDOC history and share remarkable achievements. We encourage you to read more about previous NAIDOC Week Award Winners and learn more about their excellence.  \n\n\n\nEach year you can get involved in the National NAIDOC Week Awards by nominating someone you know who has excelled in one or more of the Award categories. Find out more about the nominations process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNational NAIDOC Week Poster Competition \n\n\n\nThe National NAIDOC Poster competition has become an iconic feature of National NAIDOC Week and has a rich and significant history beginning in 1967 when the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) first began producing posters. NAIDOC posters have been exhibited by various Australian cultural institutions such as the National Museum of Australia and reflect not only the many significant social changes that have occurred since 1967 but also evolution of art over the last 54 years.  \n\n\n\nEach year the National NAIDOC Week Poster Competition encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists aged 13 years and over to submit their artwork which reflects that year’s National NAIDOC Week Theme.  \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, the National NAIDOC Week Poster competition winning artists have been afforded numerous opportunities to work with organisations such as the Australian Open\, Microsoft\, The Project television show and various state travel authorities that have wrapped public transport vehicles in the winning artwork.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNAIDOC Local Grants \n\n\n\nFor many years the Australian Government has supported National NAIDOC Week celebrations as well as providing funding via NAIDOC Local Grants through the Regional Network to assist communities to hold their own NAIDOC events.  \n\n\n\nWherever you live\, you can take part in NAIDOC Week celebrations. SUMMARY:World Mangrove Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:Mangroves are rare\, spectacular and prolific ecosystems on the boundary between land and sea. These extra ordinary ecosystems contribute to the wellbeing\, food security\, and protection of coastal communities worldwide. They support a rich biodiversity and provide a valuable nursery habitat for fish and crustaceans. Mangroves also act as a form of natural coastal defense against storm surges\, tsunamis\, rising sea levels and erosion. Their soils are highly effective carbon sinks\, sequestering vast amounts of carbon.Yet mangroves are disappearing three to five times faster than overall global forest losses\, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts. Current estimates indicate that mangrove coverage has been divided by two in the past 40 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n“Mangroves  are  in  danger:  it  is  estimated  that  more  than  three  quarters  of  mangroves  in  the  world  are  now  threatened  and  with  them  all  the  fine  balances  that  depend on them.  This is why UNESCO is acting to protect them\, along with other valuable blue carbon ecosystems\, through its geoparks\, world heritage sites and biosphere reserves.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAudrey AzoulayUNESCO Director-General \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorld Mangrove Day – unesco website >>

SUMMARY:National Landcare Week 2023
DESCRIPTION:2023 LANDCARE WEEK:\n\n\n\nBe inspired\, be empowered\, be a landcarer\n\n\n\nMonday 7 – Sunday 13 August\, 2023\n\n\n\nLandcare Week is an annual celebration of landcare held during the first week of August to acknowledge the Australians who are actively restoring\, enhancing and protecting the natural environment in their community. \n\n\n\nWith over 6\,000 groups and 140\,000+ volunteers\, the landcare movement encompasses farmers and farming systems groups\, landowners\, landcare groups and networks\, Traditional Owners\, Bushcare and ‘Friends of’ groups\, Coastcare\, Dunecare and Rivercare groups\, Landcare facilitators and coordinators\, youth groups and other community groups involved in protecting\, enhancing or restoring their local environment. The Junior Landcare program also provides a pathway for children to become lifelong landcarers starting with early learning childhood centres through to primary and secondary schools. \n\n\n\nThis Landcare Week we’re showcasing how Landcare Is For Everyone and celebrating the achievements of all\, from farmers planting wildlife corridors on their properties to students learning about biodiversity and where their food comes from\, to community groups creating native seedbanks to businesses encouraging their staff to volunteer with landcare groups – there are opportunities for everyone to take action with landcare. Landcare brings everyone together to actively be involved in conservation land management\, improve biodiversity and promote sustainable agriculture. \n\n\n\nThe theme for this year’s Landcare Week is: ‘Be inspired\, be empowered\, be a landcarer’. We will be showcasing people across Australia who are involved in landcare and why they volunteer with landcare to inspire others to feel empowered to get involved in their local landcare or other community environmental group in their area. If you would like to find a group near you to get involved during Landcare week\, click here. \n\n\n\nStay tuned to our social media pages as we share incredible landcare stories from around Australia that showcase the work that the volunteers are doing and why they do what they do. \n\n\n\nYou can post your stories in the comments on our social pages and share the Landcare Week posts to your own pages or promote your own stories on your social pages.
