SUMMARY:Bird Identification with Ann Houghton
DESCRIPTION:By Willunga Environment Centre and Sustainable Onkaparinga \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn how to identify birds and their calls! Know the difference between male and female and much more! Beginners through to the experienced \n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\n2 hours\n\n\n\nMobile eTicket\n\n\n\n\nTickets are by donation so please pay generously what you can afford. The donations will allow us to provide afternoon tea at the conclusion of the event. \n\n\n\nAnn Houghton\, photographer for the Willunga Birds publication will help us learn about how to identify birds\, showing how different certain birds are between male/female\, and use an app called Australian Birds by Michael Morecombe to identify bird calls. You will see plenty of photos and have many opportunitites to ask questions as well as bring in any photos or bird calls you may need identified. Ann and others lead our birdy outings and has a wealth of knowledge stored. She travels extensively with her Husband Les on Birdy outings across Australia\, and with many other groups. \n\n\n\n(The app gives you a picture of the selected bird which also points out various features of the bird along with a written description plus a map showing the range and distribution. The most helpful part of the app is the bird calls and the various calls each bird makes including their ‘alarm’ call. It is an easy app to use and costs $29.99 A good investment but not necessary for the workshop) \n\n\n\n\nget tickets

SUMMARY:National NAIDOC Week 2023
DESCRIPTION:National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday)\, to celebrate and recognise the history\, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest\, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNational NAIDOC Week Awards Ceremony \n\n\n\nNational NAIDOC Week’s premiere event is the National NAIDOC Week Awards Ceremony which showcases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence. Every year\, a different focus city is chosen to host the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony.  \n\n\n\nPrevious National NAIDOC Week Award Winners come from many different communities within Australia and have different backgrounds\, however they are all part of NAIDOC history and share remarkable achievements. We encourage you to read more about previous NAIDOC Week Award Winners and learn more about their excellence.  \n\n\n\nEach year you can get involved in the National NAIDOC Week Awards by nominating someone you know who has excelled in one or more of the Award categories. Find out more about the nominations process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNational NAIDOC Week Poster Competition \n\n\n\nThe National NAIDOC Poster competition has become an iconic feature of National NAIDOC Week and has a rich and significant history beginning in 1967 when the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) first began producing posters. NAIDOC posters have been exhibited by various Australian cultural institutions such as the National Museum of Australia and reflect not only the many significant social changes that have occurred since 1967 but also evolution of art over the last 54 years.  \n\n\n\nEach year the National NAIDOC Week Poster Competition encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists aged 13 years and over to submit their artwork which reflects that year’s National NAIDOC Week Theme.  \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, the National NAIDOC Week Poster competition winning artists have been afforded numerous opportunities to work with organisations such as the Australian Open\, Microsoft\, The Project television show and various state travel authorities that have wrapped public transport vehicles in the winning artwork.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNAIDOC Local Grants \n\n\n\nFor many years the Australian Government has supported National NAIDOC Week celebrations as well as providing funding via NAIDOC Local Grants through the Regional Network to assist communities to hold their own NAIDOC events.  \n\n\n\nWherever you live\, you can take part in NAIDOC Week celebrations. SUMMARY:World Mangrove Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:Mangroves are rare\, spectacular and prolific ecosystems on the boundary between land and sea. These extra ordinary ecosystems contribute to the wellbeing\, food security\, and protection of coastal communities worldwide. They support a rich biodiversity and provide a valuable nursery habitat for fish and crustaceans. Mangroves also act as a form of natural coastal defense against storm surges\, tsunamis\, rising sea levels and erosion. Their soils are highly effective carbon sinks\, sequestering vast amounts of carbon.Yet mangroves are disappearing three to five times faster than overall global forest losses\, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts. Current estimates indicate that mangrove coverage has been divided by two in the past 40 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n“Mangroves  are  in  danger:  it  is  estimated  that  more  than  three  quarters  of  mangroves  in  the  world  are  now  threatened  and  with  them  all  the  fine  balances  that  depend on them.  This is why UNESCO is acting to protect them\, along with other valuable blue carbon ecosystems\, through its geoparks\, world heritage sites and biosphere reserves.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAudrey AzoulayUNESCO Director-General \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorld Mangrove Day – unesco website >>

SUMMARY:National Landcare Week 2023
DESCRIPTION:2023 LANDCARE WEEK:\n\n\n\nBe inspired\, be empowered\, be a landcarer\n\n\n\nMonday 7 – Sunday 13 August\, 2023\n\n\n\nLandcare Week is an annual celebration of landcare held during the first week of August to acknowledge the Australians who are actively restoring\, enhancing and protecting the natural environment in their community. \n\n\n\nWith over 6\,000 groups and 140\,000+ volunteers\, the landcare movement encompasses farmers and farming systems groups\, landowners\, landcare groups and networks\, Traditional Owners\, Bushcare and ‘Friends of’ groups\, Coastcare\, Dunecare and Rivercare groups\, Landcare facilitators and coordinators\, youth groups and other community groups involved in protecting\, enhancing or restoring their local environment. The Junior Landcare program also provides a pathway for children to become lifelong landcarers starting with early learning childhood centres through to primary and secondary schools. \n\n\n\nThis Landcare Week we’re showcasing how Landcare Is For Everyone and celebrating the achievements of all\, from farmers planting wildlife corridors on their properties to students learning about biodiversity and where their food comes from\, to community groups creating native seedbanks to businesses encouraging their staff to volunteer with landcare groups – there are opportunities for everyone to take action with landcare. Landcare brings everyone together to actively be involved in conservation land management\, improve biodiversity and promote sustainable agriculture. \n\n\n\nThe theme for this year’s Landcare Week is: ‘Be inspired\, be empowered\, be a landcarer’. We will be showcasing people across Australia who are involved in landcare and why they volunteer with landcare to inspire others to feel empowered to get involved in their local landcare or other community environmental group in their area. If you would like to find a group near you to get involved during Landcare week\, click here. \n\n\n\nStay tuned to our social media pages as we share incredible landcare stories from around Australia that showcase the work that the volunteers are doing and why they do what they do. \n\n\n\nYou can post your stories in the comments on our social pages and share the Landcare Week posts to your own pages or promote your own stories on your social pages. Don’t forget to use the hashtags #landcare#landcareweek #BeInspired  #BeEmpowered  #BeALandcarer  and tag @landcareaustralia so we can engage with your post. \n\n\n\nFind out more: https://landcareaustralia.org.au/landcareweek/

SUMMARY:National Bilby Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:The second Sunday of September is National Bilby Day in Australia. \n\n\n\nBackgroundNational Bilby Day was officially launched in 2005 and the celebrations are held on the second Sunday of September. \n\n\n\nBilbies\, or rabbit-bandicoots\, are desert-dwelling marsupial omnivores; they are members of the order Peramelemorphia. At the time of European colonisation of Australia\, there were two species. The lesser bilby became extinct in the 1950s; the greater bilby survives but remains endangered. It is currently listed as a vulnerable species. \n\n\n\nThe term bilby is a loanword from the Yuwaalaraay Aboriginal language of northern New South Wales\, meaning long-nosed rat. It is known as dalgite in Western Australia\, and the nickname pinkie is sometimes used in South Australia. The Wiradjuri of New South Wales also call it “bilby.” \n\n\n\nSave the Bilby FundSave the Bilby Fund is committed to the recovery of wild populations of bilby and saving the species from extinction. The Fund undertakes direct action in bilby conservation and engages community support through education and raising awareness. \n\n\n\nFind out more: savethebilbyfund.org

SUMMARY:Save the Koala Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:SAVE THE KOALA DAY IS COMING ON THE 29th of SEPTEMBER 2023\n\n\n\nSave the Koala Day is observed annually on the last Friday of September. It was created to raise awareness of the dangers that koalas face on a daily basis and highlight the importance of conserving their natural habitat. \n\n\n\nThe koala\, sometimes inaccurately called koala bear\, is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to coastal areas of eastern and southern Australia. Koalas can be found in the states of New South Wales\, Queensland\, South Australia\, and Victoria. Although koalas resemble bears\, the two animals are not related at all. The koala is the only extant species of the genus Phascolarctos. Its closest living relative is the wombat. \n\n\n\nKoalas spend most of their time in eucalyptus trees which they feed on. Although the genus Eucalyptus consists of more then 600 species\, koalas show a strong preference for the foliage of around 30 of them. Due to eucalyptus leaves having a high water content\, koalas don’t have to drink often. However\, larger koalas do require additional sources of water\, contrary to a popular misconception that koalas don’t drink at all. \n\n\n\nSince the foliage of eucalyptus isn’t a particularly great source of energy\, koalas sleep or rest up to 20 hours a day to limit their energy use and spend most of their waking time eating. They spend most of their time in trees and descend to the ground only when they need to move to another tree. Koalas are asocial animals and don’t interact much with one another with the exception of mothers and their offspring (by the way\, young koalas are called joeys). \n\n\n\nThe koala is classified as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Read List of Threatened Species. The main threat faced by koalas is the destruction and fragmentation of habitat caused by urbanization in coastal areas and by land clearing in rural areas. Other threats include attacks by domestic dogs\, wildlife-vehicle collisions\, bushfires\, droughts\, and the effects of climate change. \n\n\n\nFind out more: https://www.savethekoala.com/how-to-help/save-the-koala-month/

Now we have AUSMAP – the Australian Microplastic Assessment Project. \n\n\n\nAUSMAP is a global first\, nationwide citizen science that engages and educates the community to collect scientifically reliable data on microplastics from shorelines across the country – from coasts to catchments – to identify litter hotspots and assist in source reduction. \n\n\n\nAUSMAP is a powerful management tool that forms the basis to develop & implement regional litter prevention strategies for stakeholders to use\, and act on.   \n\n\n\nWe need to know how much is out there before we figure out what to do with it.  And we need large numbers of Australians to engage with behaviour change so we can stop any more plastic from entering our waterways and design effective mitigation strategies. \n\n\n\nThat’s why we need you in our AUSMAP collaborative citizen science project!FAQs What is the cost of the Training Day?The cost of this AUSMAP Training day is $45 per person (EVENT HALF PRICE) – don’t miss out!FREE OF CHARGE TO THOSE THAT WANT TO RECONNECT & REFRESH – just email events@ausmap.orgDonations to support the ongoing development and delivery of AUSMAP are greatly appreciated. All donations over $2 are tax-deductible. \n\n\n\nWhat do I need to bring?* You will be required to collect water as part of the field sampling\, so please bring waterproof shoes (or go barefoot)* Sun protection and/or rain jacket* Notebook and pen* Reusable water bottle and coffee cupWhat obligation do I have after I complete the AUSMAP Training Program? As you register\, you will complete the AUSMAP Collaborator Agreement questions & agree to the following: \n\n\n\n     1) Where possible\, assist in sampling up to 4 times per year in a proposed location; \n\n\n\n     2) Follow our AUSMAP methodology\, using our field kit & equipment; \n\n\n\n     3) Send datasheets and microplastic samples to AUSMAP for further analysis; & \n\n\n\n     4) Promote the AUSMAP program with your local community. \n\n\n\n     5) AUSMAP methodology\, sampling\, data and name cannot be used for profit.  \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please contact events@ausmap.org \n\n\n\n\nRegister for event >>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aaeesouthaustraliachapter/ \n\n\n\n& Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aaeesachapter/
